And a Happy New Year of the Red Dog from my own red dogs, too!

  1. I love it! I have a wiener dog, myself (a male silver dapple) and I’ve always adored Escher. In your piece, I like the green dogs best. It’s wonderful–I mean it–I’d hang it on my wall.

In addition to the green pups, I love the deep reds in many of your recent works… are they frequently used colors, or do they reflect a more passing phase in your life/work?

  2. Hmm… Ok, I just saw the link, and the artist isn’t listed. 😡 I guess I spoke too soon. (Just change the “your” to “this” and it’s fine, right?)

I’m still curious about your use of reds, though… and have you ever considered trying your own wiener dog art?

  3. Haven’t tried Escherizing myself, yet – I’m not that into the repition of pattern – yet…

Reds are definitely a part of me – I like very intense, saturated colors. I have had the experience of getting cataracts at a very young age – in my 40s – and so now, I see very bright, intense colors. Compare Monets pre and post cataract surgery, for instance. One of the truly weird things is I see ultraviolet light, so anything in sunlight just glows for me. I also see bits of rainbows reflected off the edges of the implanted lenses. I also don’t seem to have true perspective anymore, since the lenses are fixed at different distances, so my drawings seem to come out with a very flat effect. I thought for a while I was just drawing badly, but then realized that is actually how I see now. It’s weird.

  4. Actually, it is quite interesting. I just finished reading about an artist who went colorblind in the middle of his career, and found his mind adapted in strange ways. Perhaps now that you’re seeing a broader part of the spectrum, your mind is flattening things a bit to decipher more complex input.

I also recall reading recently that some bird species that look otherwise plain are very decorative when considering ultraviolet light… You might find bird watching more exciting, too. 🙂
