Enforced Doodling is Boring

Enforced Doodles

This is my enforced doodling from one of the exercises in The Artful Journal. As they say, “This will seem like a challenge to some, a chore to others, and a gift to those of you who like to explore your inner landscape.” Hmm, I’m all about exploring my inner landscape, but this was a chore. The book says to write about what you experienced. Well, I experienced being so bored I went and found some Brian Culbertson music, and doodled to that. It helped, but being limited to the little one inch squares feels really confining for me.

If you want to see other people’s doodles, try doodle at work — fun site.

Maybe this is why many people think they aren’t good at art- having to do these exercises…

Update: The boring doodles have turned into a coloring page and are now rather fun. Guess I like color better than black and white! I’ll post the color version later when I’m done playing. Off to run errands for a bit now, though…

  1. Actually, I really like the result! It’s a crazy quilt. Now I’m tempted to try it. It’ll be interesting to see if it’s boring for me too. I chuckled at your last sentence. There’s truth in it. 🙂

  2. These are doodles with prismacolor marker on grid paper. I’ve never really gotten the hang of computer art or graphics – go figure, as much as I love computers. Guess it just doesn’t jibe with my creative streak. I get all left-brained on the computer and my right brain tunes out. Perhaps if I tried it with music, it would work. But there’s something about touch involved as well – I am often found with paint all over my hands, body, clothes…

And Kathryn, you should definitely try it. I think the confines of the borders would be great for some people, and the patterns that develop are interesting. I really like the idea of quilts, but never got into it because of all the sewing involved. But art quilts are so cool… I read a couple of blogs from art quilters, and they fascinate me.
