The truth is, Californians voted themselves into the mess they are in. I do not, by saying that, forgive their jerk politicians (who, like the feds, love expediencey and enriching developers over anything). Prop 13 is coming home to roost.
Yeah, I get it. After the idiot voters passed Prop 13 they forgot something: by depriving their government of money, they had to accept reduced services sooner or later.
Prop 13 was passed years ago. A lot of us didn’t even live here then. The structural problems of the legislature are very difficult to overcome — the two thirds rules in particular. We’re at a very divisive point, with the rural and urban communities really fighting it out. Funny thing is the rural areas who think they are so independent take more state funds per capita than the urban areas do. Ironic.
Being no fan of the Schwartzanator, I am nevertheless channelling most of my frustration over the budget BS toward the California legislators. These people should be fired (Tit for tat – Arnold’s career in politics is over now, too).
Yes, but it’s the structural problems that make it so difficult — without them it wouldn’t be possible to have the logjam impasse the Republicans are able to create. Not that the Dems help. A few of them are quite good, though. So blaming “these people” doesn’t really help, either. The problem is there is virtually no accountability, as they are easily reelected most of the time by constituents who barely know who their legislators are.
Yep, the system is flawed, and clearly we cannot just “fire” the legislators… but nevertheless, they SHOULD be fired! BUT, instead, we’re stuck with a bad governor, and a legislative body that is ineffective and mostly incompetent as a body.
