I love summertime!

The “renters” currently occupying our patio heater — so cute!

  1. We’ve had birdies (house finches) nest in our hanging plants here at the Cape. One windy summer I worried about the nest incessantly (you know, in heavy winds, while I was watering, etc.). The birdies fledged and flew, and all was well.

I understand tomoatoes were not the evil fruit recently. My memories of fresh home-grown tomatoes are so strong that even the ones you get now which claim to be “heirloom” tomatoes, or “beefsteak” tomatoes, or “ugli ripe” tomatoes don’t taste like much. Science has ruined the tomato.

Never heard of a “brandywine” tomato. Tell me more.

By the way, I could not access your blog at all yesterday, every attempt “timed out.” (And, by the by, where’s the appreciative comment on my buffet poem)?

  2. OK, ok, I like your poem!

Btandywine tomatoes are supposedly heirloom. They have a pretty good flavor but can get a bit mealy if left to sit too long, I guess. For a large tomato it’s pretty good. I tend to like smaller grape tomatoes just for eating myself, or romas for sauce. I have some yellow pear tomatoes that are delicious right now. Lots more coming on, and soon it’s gonna be salsa time! The peppers are doing well this year, too.

Agreed on the commercial tomatoes — those things are crap. Growing your own is the only way to get really awesome fresh ones.

I’m pretty sure the salmonella thing was from chicken somewhere in the kitchens of the offending restaurants. My own suspicion is it was a major supplier (Tyson?) and the FDA didn’t want to implicate them. I hates the evil Tyson.

Yes, my host had problems yesterday. Major attacks on the servers lately from hackers looking for new servers to use for spam, apparently…. one of the gmail servers has even been cracked and is now a spam machine. Talk of the day in my sys admin friends’ circles.
