Sounds like a great idea to me. Why am I paying taxes to support the rich?

The polis paid for the ship and its crew: equipment and repairs were paid for by a rich citizen as one of the liturgies (trierarchia – a brilliant Athenian notion which shamed the richest citizens into spending their wealth on the city, without the need for taxation). That’s a good point. Why IS there no shame? Grab all you can and screw everyone else? It doesn’t take very long before that backfires… Oh yeah, that’s right where we are now, huh…
And unfortunately when it does backfire, it’s going to be enormous. BUt hey, the market is happy for today, at least….
