Llamatron! (reposted)

My Christmas present to all of YOU will be a gift from heifer.org,
a llama to be donated to a third world family in need!

If you would like to join me in giving away llamas or something else this
year, my registry page is here:

Let’s see how many llamas we can give away! woo hoo!

Why llamas? From the Heifer catalog:

“Even that person on your gift list who seems to have everything has probably never been given a llama or alpaca. And their uniqueness doesn’t stop there! Llamas and their close cousins, alpacas, are the only large domesticated animals native to South America. They are ideally suited for the harsh environments where so many impoverished families live. They are remarkably disease-resistant animals and require little supervision. Their special hooves do not damage the fragile ecosystem – helping communities preserve what little resources are available. And unlike other animals, they can carry heavy loads at high altitudes. Plus, their fine wool is highly prized and provides families with clothing to stay warm and income opportunities that are so hard to come by in the region.”

And for those who never played llamtron, now you can!

And don’t forget:

Llamas are dangerous, so if you see one where people are swimming, you shout: “look out, there are llamas!”.

  1. A red llama would be very cool!!

They brought llamas to the mall in the town we lived in when my girls were small and one leaned over and started eating my seven year old’s hair; who burst into hysterical laughter but just stood there and let it do it. She called it a Llama-la.

    Thanks for the memory!

  2. I’m afraid I’m a renegade there. I generally contribute fowl.

It’s a consequence of having spent two years living among vegetarians. Geese, chicken, and ducks tend to convert food energy into animal protein much more efficiently than do larger animals. On the other hand, it is hard to get a duck to work as a pack animal.

  3. heh. Now I have this mental image of ducks with tiny backpacks on them….

But if you see a llama where people are swimming, you shout, “Look out, there are llamas!”

I wonder if the ducks are as dangerous….
