Which way are you goin'?

Which way are you goin’
Which side will you be on
Will you stand and watch while all the seeds of hate are sown
Will you stand with those who say that His will be done
One hand on the Bible, one hand on the gun
One hand on the Bible, one hand on the gun

Which way are you looking?
Is it hard to see
Do you say what’s wrong for him is not wrong for me
You walk the streets of righteousness
But you refuse to understand
You say you love the baby, but then you crucify the man
You say you love the baby, but then you crucify the man

Everyday things are changin’
Words once honored turn to lies
People wonderin’ can you blame them
It’s too far to run and too late to hide

Now you turn your back on all the things that you used to preach
Now it’s let him live in freedom if he lives like me
Well your line has changed, confusion rings
What have you become
Your olive branches turn to spears when your flowers turn to guns
Your olive branches turn to spears when your flowers turn to guns

Jim Croce

Another tribute to the dead today. I loved Jim Croce’s music when I was in high school, and I cried so much the day he died. He was gone far too soon from all of our lives, like so many of the great musicians of that time. I was playing his music today in my car, and this song came on, which I had completely forgotten about. Amazing how appropriate to today the sentiment still is.

But Jim was always timeless, as is his music. He may not have saved time in a bottle, but he saved it in his music.

  1. Donna, wow, three comments in one day! Yes, I love crooners and singer songwriters, that is, nice storytellers and vocalists. Croce was indeed superb. One of my favorites in almost any collection I make of vocalists and storytellers. Thanks! I do get nostalgic (but from where), when I listen to his music. It is almost what Emily Dickinson called “sweet sorrow,” or what Kenneth Burke called “dancing with tears in my eyes.”

    Thanks!
