  1. Are there any progressives who DO NOT support 86?
I seem to be the only one but I wonder how it is justified and what stops us from taxing any other products bad for consumers to support health care etc?

  2. I don’t know, Michal. I do know some progressives who are against it.

Having watched my dad die of lung cancer at age 65, I tend to think anything that discourages people from smoking is a good thing. Not a good way to go, at all.

My personal solution would be to outlaw pre-rolled cigarettes and make people roll their own. At least it would slow them down a bit. ;^)

  3. I googled the progressive voters’ guide and found your conversation. I thought Michal’s comment raises an important issue that seems to be overlooked or minimized. . .I’ve heard folks argue that in addition to raising monies for valuable healthcare projects these taxes will cut into profits for tobacco companies. (How?) Maybe in the long run, if cost actually deters smoking. . .but in the short/medium range, these taxes will do little to affect companies or wealthy smokers and will really impact the budgets of poorer smokers. . .If this is aimed at curbing unhealthy practices, perhaps we should create a bill that applies a two dollar tax to every fastfood drive-up window purchase and give tax rebates to folks who eat organic, unprocessed foods and exercise daily!

  4. Oooh, I love that idea! Seriously, there ought to be more incentives for doing the right things in life! I prefer free health care for everyone who doesn’t smoke, eats right and exercises regularly, myself…..
