OK, I'm confused….

In San Diego, we’re all used to May Gray and June Gloom – the gray clouds that hang around from the marine layer for part or most of the day. I live about 15 miles inland, so we usually see the gray clear off around noon.

But I have never, in 20 years, seen this effect here in August. Yet, so far this week has been overcast. And today…

It’s 70 degrees and it’s drizzling here? At 1:00? In August???

Who ordered this weather?

But it’s better than the 108 degrees a couple weeks ago, with 160 people in California dying from the heat. I really feel for the east coasters suffering through that heat wave this week. Hope the power holds out and they can stay cool.

Here’s what our local weather talking head has to say:

I am not a meteorologist, but I do play one on television. Still, I have no clue why San Diego is having such strange weather — the weirdest summer I’ve seen in my 34 years living in America’s Finest City. Even our crack staff of microclimate prognosticators are at times baffled by the current atmospheric events.

No one is certain, but there are some interesting theories floating around. Here are the top 10 theories why San Diego’s having such weird weather:

10. Influx of sweaty Zonies causing rise in humidity.
9. God is peeved at Mel Gibson.
8. Publicity stunt for Al Gore’s new movie.
7. Steam from too many Starbucks causing permanent marine layer.
6. El Nino merged with La Nina to form El Nintendo.
5. KFMB swapped weather with Chicago to get Oprah.
4. San Diego has just too darn many realtors.
3. Acid from Bilbray-Busby campaign commercials shrunk the ozone layer.
2. Hell has finally frozen over.

And the number one theory why San Diego is having weird weather:

1. Mother Nature is “juicing.”

As President Harry S. Truman once said, “If you can’t stand the heat, stay out of the East County.”

  1. Love your lists.
I have spent lots of time on Coronado and never heard of temperatures reaching 100 WOW. Guess I will pull back all my complaints about our weather — well perhaps not – the weather is something to talk about when it is this hot and strange…

  2. Thanks for thinking of us East Coasters. Yes it is hot! But I can’t figure out why we never loose power like the West Coasters do.
